  • Supporting evidence-based development practices

In other words, your input helps make our tools better – not just for you, but for all current and future users.

How are we conducting our studies?

This is an overview of how we measure potential and performance in a scientifically grounded and job-relevant way. It explains how validated assessments and research-based performance data are combined to understand what drives success in different roles and organisational contexts. It also outlines why these studies are conducted and how the insights are used to support fair, accurate, and meaningful development and selection practices.

Measuring potential through job-relevant assessments

We all have patterns of thought, feeling, and behaviour. These unique personalities and capabilities shape our motivation and approach to work and form the basis of our professional potential. At Assessio, we measure potential as the combination between personality and cognitive capabilities.

Whereas cognitive capacity is a strong predictor of performance (especially for high complexity roles) (Schmidt, Oh & Schaffer 2016), personality is known to be related to a wide range of work-related outcomes, including turnover, group success, and job satisfaction (Barrick & Mount, 2001, Jenkins & Griffith, 2004, Tett & Christiansen, 2007).

Assessio’s scientifically validated psychometric tests use best-practice theoretical frameworks to build a solid foundation upon which to understand the individual differences that drive performance in a working context.

Collecting research-grounded performance insights

In broad terms, performance can be understood as achievement, or the process through which someone achieves an outcome. The research community is aligned on defining job performance as a combination of several factors, including task performance (living up to the expectations within one’s job description), contextual performance (showing support for the business through collaboration and constructive behaviors), and adaptive performance (adjusting to and coping with change) (Pradhan & Jena, 2017).

But it’s one thing to understand performance, and another is to measure it as accurately as possible. Considering differences between different methods, we designed a behavioural observation scale and combined the benefits of different methods. This minimises the risk of bias but still provides concrete feedback in a format that is easy to use, scalable, and offers the possibility to aggregate the data) (Aggarwal & Thakur, 2013).

Understanding what drives performance

With the availability of high quality, accurate measures of both potential and performance, this research connects the two to gain insight into what elements result in real-world performance. These insights hold some contextual elements that are unique to your role and company culture and can help guide and strengthen your organisation’s HR initiatives. They may also contribute to a broader understanding of performance prediction and fairness in job-related selection and development assessments for future candidates and employees.

The final takeaway

High-quality, fair, and predictive assessments rely on real-world data and continuous research. Through performance insight studies, Assessio combines scientifically validated measures of potential and performance to better understand what drives success in different roles and contexts. By contributing, organisations help strengthen evidence-based, job-relevant, and fair assessment practices – benefiting both current decision-making and future talent development.
