What's inside

Explore the five dimensions of Learning Agility, from Change Agility to Self-Awareness, and why measuring both aptitude and ambition gives a more reliable read than either alone. You'll find a case study on balancing short-term hiring pressure against long-term capability, findings from a 165-person validation study, and practical tips to strengthen each dimension in your teams.

Key insights

Your strongest current-fit hire may be your weakest within two years

As role requirements rise, candidates with high Learning Agility overtake those who only match today's job profile.

Roles change faster than you can rehire for them

Screening only for today's skills locks in tomorrow's skills gap. Learning Agility shows who can pick up the skills you don't need yet.

"Just this once" exceptions add up

Every rushed hire that skips your talent criteria solves this quarter's problem and creates a capability gap for the next one.

Curiosity predicts professional success better than any other personality trait measured

In a 165-person validation study (r = .26). If your assessments don't measure it, you're missing a signal of who will grow.

Assessing personality or values alone doesn’t give you the full picture

Someone can have the capability without the drive, or the drive without the capability. Check that your assessment covers both.

FAQ

What is Learning Agility?

Learning Agility is the ability to develop effective new behaviours from experience and apply them in new situations. It is a form of learning capability and a strong indicator of future potential.

What are the five dimensions of Learning Agility?

Change Agility, Mental Agility, People Agility, Results Agility and Self-Awareness. Self-Awareness lets people put the other four to use.

How is Learning Agility measured?

A reliable measure combines aptitude (what aligns with your personality and natural strengths) and ambition (your values and what energises you). Assessing only one gives an incomplete picture.

Why does Learning Agility predict future performance?

Role requirements shift faster than people can be rehired for them. People with high Learning Agility acquire new skills quickly, including skills that become essential later.

Can Learning Agility be developed?

Yes. Taking on unfamiliar projects, asking for feedback from many perspectives and reflecting regularly on goals all strengthen it.

Should I hire for current skills or Learning Agility?

Both matter. Current skills solve today's problem; Learning Agility shows who will keep up as requirements change. For roles that are changing quickly, weighting Learning Agility more heavily usually pays off over time.
